Phone Company (Synchronous Communication)

Top Ten Tips for Synchronous Communication:

1. Use descriptive names for your chat rooms.

2. Make sure students know the difference between a “logged” (i.e., records are kept) and and “unlogged” chat room.

3. If you use group work, require groups to hold online meetings in logged chat rooms.

4. If you have more groups than chat rooms, stagger the group's meeting times.

5. Hold virtual office hours. This is more effective at certain times than others (e.g., the night before an exam or project deadline).

6. If possible, set an alarm to alert you if someone enters a chat room. Otherwise, you have to constantly watch an empty chat room!

7. Invite virtual guest speakers to participate via chat. If they don't have to appear in a classroom, the entire world becomes a potential source of guest speakers.

8. Post chat logs (edited, if necessary) to disseminate useful information.

9. Consider holding a class session online instead of on campus.

10. Use a chat room to conduct "virtual tours" of web sites.
