Distance Ed University

You'd like to learn more about distance learning, but who has the time? Well, now you do because we're inaugurating a free service to help make you an expert on distance learning!

We wade through documents and reports on distance learning and give you executive summaries of them, and also provide links to download dozens of seminal documents right over the web.

SUMMARIES

In the past few years, there have been some seminal research studies conducted on the Internet and the emerging field of distance learning. We know you meant to get around to reading them (ahem!), but you've got such little time and the reports are so big. Well, we've distilled the biggest and best to their essence---hundreds of pages down to fewer than fifty. Enjoy!

  • A great place to start is with the landmark report presented by a special Web-Based Education Committee to the U.S. Congress in December 2000. Check out our abbreviated, Adobe Acrobat version of the Committee's report, The Power of the Internet for Learning.
  • The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has undertaken a mammoth longitudinal study of Internet users. Here's an Adobe Acrobat summary of their first report, titled The UCLA Internet Report: Surveying the Digital Future.
  • MERLOT and the World Lecture Hall World Lecture Hall are two premier sites where instructors share resources on distance learning. Researcher Curtis Bonk surveyed users of these sites and came up with some very interesting findings. Read all about it in our Adobe Acrobat summary of his report, Online Teaching in an Online World.
  • The Council for Higher Education Accreditation was commissioned by the National Education Association and Blackboard, Inc., to compile and verify a list of benchmarks for quality Internet-based distance education. Here's an Adobe PDF summary of their report, Quality on the Line: Benchmarks for Success in Internet-Based Distance Education.
  • The Council for Higher Education Accreditation also releases regular reports on the state of distance learning in the U.S. Here's an Adobe Acrobat summary of their 2000 report, Distance Learning in Higher Education.
